MEET THE PHYSICIANS

Dr. Curtis Thorpe

Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Curtis Thorpe
Head Team Physician - Orthopedic Surgeon
Baseball / Soccer / Golf
             
Dr. Thorpe is the team physician for the Lamar University Sports Medicine Team. This will mark the first year Dr Thorpe as worked with the Southeast Texas Mavricks. He is an orthopedic surgeon in sports medicine practice at Beaumont Bone and Joint Institute. Dr. Thorpe is an orthopedic surgeon with Beaumont Bone and Joint Institute. He attended medical school and completed his orthopedic residency training program at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Thorpe has practiced orthopedic surgery and sports medicine in Beaumont for 15 years. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Texas Society for Sports Medicine.

Dr. Gene Isabell, Jr.
Orthopedic Surgeon

 
Dr Isabell will also be serving his first official year as team physican for the Mavericks.
Dr. Isabell received his Bachelor of Science in Biology (Summa Cum Laude) from Sam Houston State University in 1995. He attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. From there, he completed an Orthopedic Surgical Residency in 2006 from John Peter Smith and Fort Worth Affiliated Hospitals. From 2006-2007, Dr. Isabell completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship from Baylor College of Medicine. During his time in Houston, Dr. Isabell volunteered with the University of Houston sports teams. He has been at Beaumont Bone and Joint since August 2007 and is currently working with the Lamar University Sports Medicine Team.
 

Matt Lewis
Certified Athletic Trainer

 
Matt graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1992 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Sports Medicine. He also minored in Health Education. He received his Texas state license in 1991 and his national license in 1993. From 1992 to 2000, Matt worked as an athletic trainer for the Detroit Tigers organization. Following that, he worked as the Head Athletic Trainer for Central High School in Beaumont. In 2003, he began working for Beaumont Bone and Joint Institute as the Director of Outreach for Sports Medicine. He has served on the Executive Board of the Athletic Trainers of the Golden Triangle and currently provides physician coordination services for Lamar University and local high schools. He and his wife Christi live in Beaumont with their two sons Dwight and Ty.
 
Jacqueline Champagne:
 
A senior at Lamar University majoring in Exercise Science & Fitness
Management with an emphasis in Sports Medicine and a minor in Health.
She has worked with Women’s soccer, volleyball, baseball and men’s basketball
all at Lamar University. She spent two years at Kelly High School working with
their football deparment. Jacqueline has also worked with the Justin Sports
Medicine Team at the local rodeos and bullridings. Graduating in May, she
Plans to pursue a Master’s in Health Education and strives to one day work for
a professional team or a Sports Medicine Clinic.

Shawn Klinger:

Currently the Athletic Trainer at Hardin-Jefferson High School. He has worked in
Southeast Texas for the past 17 years, starting in Port Arthur at Lincoln HS then moving
to Beaumont’s Ozen HS before moving to his current position at Hardin-Jefferson.
Originally from Montana, Shawn moved to Iowa where he attended Iowa State
University majoring in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training and a
Minor in Health. Shawn is a certified member of the National Athletic Training
Association and a licensed member of the Board of Athletic Trainers for the State of
Texas.
